Walter J. “Mule” Malesky, 76 of Masontown, formerly of Frogtown Road in Edenborn, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 28, 2024.
He was born on September 7, 1947, the son of the late Walter S. and Mary Margaret (Coll) Malesky.
Walter was a graduate of Father Kolb High School (All Saints), class of 1965.
After graduation, he served in the US Navy Reserve.
He returned home from service and began his career in the coal mines, following after his father and grandfathers. With a career spanning nearly 4 decades, “Mule” worked at Robena Mine, Dilworth Mine and Enlow Fork Mine serving in various capacities from the mine rescue squad to foreman. After retiring from “the cave” in 2008, he remained active in the mining community as a new hire and safety instructor for Mining Safety Training Plus, LLC for several more years.
Walter was a card-carrying member of many local clubs and organizations including The Messmore Rod and Gun Club, The Fort Mason American Legion Post 423, The Italo American Citizens Club of Masontown and The PALS Club.
“Mule” is somewhat of a local legend, and you could often find him spending time at the clubs with his many, many friends and lots of Coors Light. He enjoyed watching the Steelers and Pirates, and the occasional gambling bet on the spread. His laugh was unmistakable, and it could light up a room. He loved being the life of the party and never missed a chance to celebrate any occasion. If you knew Mule, you had a friend for life.
Walter is survived by his only daughter, Mallory Walters and husband Mark of Coraopolis, PA; three beloved granddaughters whom he absolutely adored: Marlowe, Maevery and Mahlia Walters; Brother and best-friend, Thomas “Moose” Malesky and sister-in-law Rita of Masontown, PA; and several very special cousins from the Reilly and Coll families.
Friends will be received in the Terravecchia-Haky Home for Funerals, Inc., 515 N. Main Street, Masontown, PA, on Tuesday July 2, 2024 from 4 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday July 3, 2024 until 9:30 a.m when prayers of transfer will be said, a mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. In St Francis of Assisi 101 S. Washington St., Masontown, PA with Rev. Teo Cortezano as Celebrant.
