Susan McCann McCracken
A lifelong resident of Masontown and treasured educator, age 70, passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 surrounded by family and friends after a long courageous battle with cancer. She was a beacon of wisdom and passion, leaving behind a legacy of dedication both in her professional and personal life.
Born on June 8, 1954, in Masontown, Pennsylvania, to the late Rosella McCann McCracken and the late Mack McCracken. Susan was a lifelong resident of the town she so dearly loved. Her commitment to education was evident in her pursuit of a master’s degree from California State College, which she utilized to its fullest during her thirty-five-year tenure at the Albert Gallatin Area School District. Susan's teaching philosophy was deeply rooted in traditional methods, and her unwavering belief in the effectiveness of these techniques made a lasting impact on her students.
Susan's approach to life was as "old school" as her teaching methods. She cherished long conversations on the phone, where her intelligence and wit could shine during heartfelt discussions with friends and family. A passionate cook, she found joy in making sauce from tomatoes grown in her own garden—a testament to her belief in the value of homegrown and homemade.
Her home was a reflection of her vibrant spirit, with each holiday bringing a new opportunity for Susan to express her creativity through decoration. Her enthusiasm for these festive occasions was infectious, and her home became a hub of activity for each holiday.
Those who knew Susan will remember her as a woman of great intelligence, passion, and spirit. She was a force of nature, with a laugh that could light up a room and a presence that was both comforting and inspiring. Her contributions to education have left an indelible mark on countless lives, and her absence will be deeply felt by all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with her.
In her passing, Susan leaves behind a legacy that will continue to resonate through the halls of the schools where she taught and in the hearts of those she touched. Her dedication to her craft, her love for tradition, and her zest for life will forever be the cornerstone of the memories she leaves with us.
Susan is survived by her uncle Russell McCann of Dallas, Texas, many cousins and friends, who will miss her dearly.
Friends will be received in the Terravecchia – Haky Home for Funerals, 515 N. Main Street Masontown, Pa., 15461 on Saturday from 10 AM to Noon, where a Funeral Service will be held at Noon.
Interment will follow in Church Hill Cemetery, McClellandtown, Pa.
Susan’s family would like to extend a thank you to the caregivers who made Susan feel comforted and cared for in her last days.
